I went to the city centre today and drop by WH Smith. I grab the GQ (UK) but nothing caught my interest. I grabbed myself the US version trying to find some tips or inspiration.

Guess what I found, Dave Patel on GQ (Yeah, I know the issue has been out for quite a while now). He’s looking sharp and it gave me such an inspiration to dress up for my working life.

It is simple yet sharp and effective. So, I guess I got at least 6 looks which I could use for the first two weeks.

Let’s dress to impress.

P/s: Guys, you got to have the copy while stock last. Try to ask the store or email the GQ office near your city. They should have it.

Friends have already noticed that change in the way I dress, overall look etc and today I would like to share you the factors that influence you to change your style. Not in great detail, but just enough to for you to consume.

At Starbucks

Head’s up

A friend of mine, Shamin said to me that I should upgrade the way I look as I have already work as a designer thus appearance is important. That is a head’s up to me personally. What he said is 100% correct and sometimes, like I always said – you just need a bit of push!

So, I take it from there – browse websites and read articles to find the style that suits you. People say either you got it or not, but I’d say “you’ll never know until you try!”.

Money

Ka-ching! Seems to be a problem to some of us. Money can’t buy style but it is a necessary. If you don’t have any disposable income (extra money), try to save. Don’t buy unnecessary stuff that will end up in the bin or buying something that you don’t even like because it’s cheap.

Personally, I don’t fancy buying expensive stuff even though sometimes I do, but I always try to find something that has a reasonable price that can add up to your overall look.

Style advisor

(UK) GQ Feb 2010

If you read David Beckham‘s part on GQ Magazine (UK) – Best Dressed 2010, you will find that he might not have an official style advisor but his wife, Victoria. Thus, I would like to make the same credit to my girlfriend. She knows my style and I know her style – somehow compliment each other.

If I have a doubt on buying something I would asked her and if she really likes it and really want me to have it, that is when I know something fits me very well. So, I thank her!

Last week I talked about being modest is charming, where you keep what you wear to yourself. Well, I have made a mistake once where a friend of mine told his friends that I am wearing a Topman shoes (at that time), spontaniously I quickly corrected that it is a Ted Baker’s. Shame on me that I am not supposed to mention it until someone really ask about it. I’ve made my mistakes. Lesson learned and I hope it won’t happen again.

Today is about dressing smart

Since September, I have made an appearance change and people has been talking about it. Some that know what I am doing will mentioned that my business is going very well, others tell a different set of stories. Let us not talk about me, instead I would like share with you the reaction of people outside of your circle of concern and influence – the public.

When you dress smart, people will treat you as white collar people (salaried professional or an educated worker), while you actually a student. The start talking about credit cards, investments and other things with you at the counter service. You’ve got the look of someone with career. Look is a different story, but the confidence of people dealing with you is priceless here!

Not sure what to drink? They'll recommend you their personal favourite!

When you dress smart, people will give you even more. Recently, I went to a breakfast bar and had a croissant with a cup of tea. They do not bother to count the extra 30p that I should pay. Sweet!

When you dress smart, people will follow you. Before, not many people are paying attention to what they wear. Now it is a different story and this is when I go to class.

When you dress smart, people will be happy to sit besides you and start a conversation.

When you dress smart, people will ask you directly where do you get your piece.

Shirt, Jacket and Jeans is good for a walk at the high street

When you dress smart, people will tend to look at you twice!

I am not suggesting suits and ties to class, but wearing something nice looking to class would be awesome! If you were to go to the high street, now it’s time for you to shine. People will wear a bit more than ordinary and a nice jacket would do the job if you know how.

Sometimes, even a clean shoes is enough to make people look at you from top to bottom. How would you reply? Smile.

Now, you’ve got your shell decorated. Next week, I wish to talk about your inner soul. Bye now!

It has been a long time I didn’t write in this blog that I can hardly remember when is the last time. Here is something that made me to write this blog post:

I am slowly trying to wear clothes that can be considered smart. I’m not talking about suit and ties to anywhere I go, but something between t-shirt, jumper, jeans, slack and jacket. For advices on style, I get it from my favourite styling blog, The Style Blogger.

I have a gut feeling that you are not to mention about brand when people mention about it unless when required (either they want to get it for themselves or buy for someone), and apparently my style guru mention these killer lines:

… if someone asks you what brand name a piece of your clothing is, don’t be quick to shout a high-end designer’s name. It doesn’t make you cool. Even if you remember the exact price and the sale associates face, play it cool and act like you don’t remember. Modesty is charming.
