» 2008: CR04

After the success of Cardiff Racing’s class 1/200 entry in 2007, all thoughts have now turned to next years car. After many hours locked away behind closed doors, we can finally let the cat out of the bag. For 2008, Cardiff Racing will continue their development of aluminum honeycomb chassis’s by producing their first full monocoque. At the heart of CR04, the previously used CBR600 engine has been replace by the Italian built Aprilia SXV550. The 550cc V-twin combines power and torque, while at the same time weighing in at less than 30kg! The weight reduction theme continues with the introduction of 10” wheels and single rear disc brake. Design work is continuing apace so watch this space for more information.

» 2007: CR03

In 2007, Cardiff Racing entered the Class 1/200 event at Formula Student for developed cars. The previous years car, CR03, was redeveloped to further improve on its success in the previous year. Numerous developments were made to the car, including a wireless electronic steering wheel for driver information and car setup, wireless car to pit telemetry and Magneto rheological dampers. On the mechanical side, the engine was equipped with a slipper clutch, aluminium front hubs and revised brake package in an effort to remove unsprung mass. The car successfully went on to finish 5th overall, winning four events, a further second place and finally finishing 5th in the endurance event due to an electrical glitch.

CR03 was the car that entered by Cardiff Racing in the 2006 Formula Student competition. The design was similar to the previous year’s car in that it keeps the engine, drive-train and rear-end suspension structure from CR02 and the chassis was made in a similar way using similar materials.

The chassis design reduced the size and weight of the previous car (CR02) and used a full monocoque design, constructed from aluminium honeycombe sandwich panel to produce a structure with high specific strength and stiffness. Innovative design features such as integral side pods and a protruding front roll hoop have helped to maximise stiffness and minimise tub size.

The car used one side pod for the cooling, and one pod to house the electronics - giving more space for the front suspension (where the electronics were on CR02), and lowering the weight of the cooling system. The engine has further modifications carried out to further improve its performance, whilst good suspension design and set-up ensures good handling.
