Today, we will release the 3D renderings of our new FS car, CR04. We are almost finish with the car and we will post the real photos of it soon.

It only seems like yesterday we were here! Sorry for the lack of updates, but we’ve only just found out how to load things! We’re currently in the middle of construction of our new chassis for CR04, our next car! It’s all change on the car front, we’re using a new engine (Aprilia SXV 550 V-twin), with 10″ wheels and a spool!!!

The chassis is a full monocoque made from Aluminium sandwich panel - our first full monocoque chassis! We’ve just finished folding and gluing all the panels together. The pic below shows it going into the autoclave for a 6 hour cure at 40 degrees to make sure all the glued joints reach their full strength.

Next week, we’ll be finishing off the roll hoops and putting all the suspension mounting points in place. Stay tune for more info.

January Testing

Ever since the concept for CR04 was first conceived one area had split the team. Do we run a differential or a spool? There was only one way to settle the argument. A scheme was developed to modify the CR03B diff into a spool. So, over a series of cold January days the Cardiff Racing descended on a disused airfield to test the now spool equipped CR03B. Both driver feedback and lap times have shown the spool to be certainly equal if not better than the differential in terms of performance. As a result of this testing, CR04 will now designed for a spool based drivetrain.

New year 2008

It is a new year and we are very determined to gain success in this year Formula Student event in July. With this also, we have redesign our website. Our new webmaster is Mohd Rafie from Malaysia which study Mechanical Engineering (1st year) in Cardiff University. Hopefully, we can gain more reputation from the website as well as sponsors.
